Baden
Base in Baden for 1–2 nights if you want thermal baths and a small old town 30–37 min by train from Zurich; skip if you want big-city sights.
Baden is a compact spa town on the Limmat, 30–37 minutes by S-Bahn from Zurich, with a walkable old town, a ruined Habsburg castle above it and Switzerland's mineral-rich thermal springs feeding the Fortyseven baths. Half the town is ABB and GE office and plant buildings, so the draw is the baths, the riverside and the small centre rather than a long sightseeing list. One night covers it; two if you add the Lägeren ridge hike or Wettingen Abbey.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; three cheek kisses among friends; avoid: Skipping the greeting in shops
- Punctuality: Be exactly on time; avoid: Running for the train expecting it to wait
- Language: Greet in the local language, then ask for English; avoid: Speaking German in Geneva as a default
- Quiet: Low voices in trains; quiet carriages are marked; avoid: Speakerphone calls
- Money: Keep financial talk discreet; avoid: Asking people's salaries
- Recycling: Separate PET, glass and cans; avoid: Leaving rubbish in hotel or flat bins unsorted
Scams and watch-outs
- Swimming in the Limmat is only safe when the current is weak and no dam warning signs are up; follow locals and stay clear of dams.
- The '1/2' (halbtax) button on ticket machines is for holders of a CHF 150 annual half-fare pass, not visitors.
- Museum Langmatt closes 15 Dec–1 Mar; check before you plan a day around it.
- Some restaurants allow smoking inside; ask for a non-smoking table if it matters.
Baden is a low-risk town; the real hazards are the Limmat current and dams when swimming, slippery paths up to Stein Castle, and pickpockets only in the usual station and market crowds.
