Vize is a small Thrace town in the Istranca foothills, 40 km from the Black Sea. Its old town sits on one hillside: a 6th-century Byzantine church still in use as a mosque, a ruined citadel above it, a 14th-century former synagogue and a late-Roman amphitheatre found only in 1998. Buses from Istanbul take about 3 hours, so it works as a stop on the way to Kırklareli or the Black Sea beaches, not as a base.

Getting around

The town is one main street with the old town on the hill north of it; everything is walkable in 10–15 minutes. Dolmuşes run frequently from Çorlu, which has buses from Tekirdağ and Istanbul. Çerkezköy is the nearest railway station, on the Istanbul–Edirne mainline.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small town; the usual cautions apply. Roads in the hills are unlit at night and winter ice is possible, so drive in daylight. Carry cash: card acceptance is limited outside the Migros and larger cafés.
  • Signage to the old town is poor: from the centre roundabout, walk uphill and ask.
  • Little Hagia Sophia is listed as open 24 h but may be locked outside prayer times; ask locally for the key.
  • The amphitheatre is an active excavation: free if you find it open, but access can be fenced off.
  • Buses over the hills to Demirköy and İğneada have been suspended in the past: confirm at the otogar before relying on them.
