Vize
Give Vize half a day, not a night: the Byzantine church, the citadel hill and the amphitheatre are all within 10 minutes' walk. Sleep in Kırklareli or Edirne.
Vize is a small Thrace town in the Istranca foothills, 40 km from the Black Sea. Its old town sits on one hillside: a 6th-century Byzantine church still in use as a mosque, a ruined citadel above it, a 14th-century former synagogue and a late-Roman amphitheatre found only in 1998. Buses from Istanbul take about 3 hours, so it works as a stop on the way to Kırklareli or the Black Sea beaches, not as a base.

- Kırklareli or Edirne instead
- Both have more beds and better food; Vize is a half-day stop between them.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers
- Mosques: Covered clothing, headscarf for women, shoes in hand, quiet voice; avoid: Walking in front of people praying; visiting during Friday midday prayer
- Hospitality: Accept tea or at least a sip; bring sweets or pastries to a home; avoid: Refusing food repeatedly; showing the soles of your feet
- Politics and history: Listen; let hosts raise it; avoid: Opinions on Atatürk, the Kurdish issue, Armenia or Cyprus with people you just met
- Ramadan: Eat discreetly in conservative towns during the day; avoid: Eating, drinking or smoking in front of fasting people in small towns
- Gestures: A slight upward head nod with a tut means 'no'; avoid: The OK hand sign (can be read as rude) and a thumb between fingers
- Dress in town: Shorts are fine in Istanbul and resorts; longer clothes in the interior and east; avoid: Swimwear away from the beach
- Names: First name plus Bey (men) or Hanım (women): 'Ahmet Bey'; avoid: Using the surname alone
Scams and watch-outs
- Signage to the old town is poor: from the centre roundabout, walk uphill and ask.
- Little Hagia Sophia is listed as open 24 h but may be locked outside prayer times; ask locally for the key.
- The amphitheatre is an active excavation: free if you find it open, but access can be fenced off.
- Buses over the hills to Demirköy and İğneada have been suspended in the past: confirm at the otogar before relying on them.
A quiet small town; the usual cautions apply. Roads in the hills are unlit at night and winter ice is possible, so drive in daylight. Carry cash: card acceptance is limited outside the Migros and larger cafés.
