Kıyıköy is a small Black Sea resort in Eastern Thrace, on a bluff between two creeks about 2–3 hours by road from Istanbul. It has a Justinian-era fortress, a rock-hewn monastery, sandy beaches and a strip of fish restaurants around the harbour. Since 2020 it has also been the landfall of the TurkStream gas pipeline, so expect heavy trucks on the approach roads. Come for a quiet one-night break, not a sightseeing trip.

Getting around

The town is walkable: the harbour, beaches and fortress gate are all within about 15 minutes on foot, and the monastery is a short walk out of town. For anything beyond — Kastro beach, the waterfalls, the Genoese castle stump — you need a car. Streets in the centre run as a one-way system, and road spikes are placed at corners, so follow the signs rather than cutting through.

Watch out

Safety

Kıyıköy is a small, low-crime resort and the main risks are practical: pipeline truck traffic on the approach roads, strong sea currents, and rough unmarked forest tracks. 112 covers police, fire and ambulance.
  • Heavy truck traffic on the Saray and Vize roads from the pipeline works; drive defensively.
  • Do not photograph or linger near the TurkStream facility about 2 km north of town.
  • Swimming: currents off the sandy spits and near Kastro are strong; stay close to shore.
  • Access tracks to the waterfalls and the Genoese castle are dirt, unmarked and rough — not for a standard 2WD.
  • Many pansiyons and restaurants close outside summer; confirm before you book a winter trip.
