Shimonoseki下関

Give Shimonoseki one night: fugu dinner, the Kanmon Straits and the Chofu samurai quarter. Two nights only if you add a Kitakyushu or Hagi day.

Shimonoseki is the westernmost city on Honshu, facing Kitakyushu across the Kanmon Straits. It is the fugu capital of Japan, the site of the 1895 treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War, and a walkable port town with a separate, quieter samurai quarter at Chofu. Most travellers pass through on the San'yo line between Hiroshima and Fukuoka; one night is enough for the core, and the city works well as a cheaper bed than Kitakyushu.

Getting around

Sanden Kotsu buses link both stations with the port and Chofu (short hop about ¥170; Chofu about ¥340, 25 min). Most port-area sights sit on flat ground along Route 9 and are walkable; Chofu is a long walk, so take the bus. The Kanmon pedestrian tunnel crosses to Moji on foot, free, 06:00–20:00.

JR Shimonoseki Station area

Business hotels, the Sea Mall and Green Mall, and the bus hub; best for one night with bags.

Karato and the port

Meiji-era foreign buildings, the aquarium and the ferry piers; quieter, a 20–25 min walk or short bus from the station.

Shin-Shimonoseki

Shinkansen stop with cheaper hotels; 7 min by local train to the centre, so only useful if you leave early.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-crime port city. The real risks are fugu eaten outside a licensed kitchen, the tunnel's 20:00 closing, and summer heat and humidity in July and August.
  • Fugu must be prepared by a licensed chef: eat it in a restaurant, never self-cater.
  • The Kanmon tunnel closes overnight (06:00–20:00); check the last return before you cross.
  • Chofu sights close around 16:30–17:00 and some are closed Mondays: check before the bus ride.
  • 13 Aug fireworks night fills every hotel in the city: book weeks ahead or avoid the date.
