Shimonoseki is the westernmost city on Honshu, facing Kitakyushu across the Kanmon Straits. It is the fugu capital of Japan, the site of the 1895 treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War, and a walkable port town with a separate, quieter samurai quarter at Chofu. Most travellers pass through on the San'yo line between Hiroshima and Fukuoka; one night is enough for the core, and the city works well as a cheaper bed than Kitakyushu.

Most port-area sights sit on flat ground along Route 9 and are walkable; Chofu is a long walk, so take the bus. Scams and watch-outs
- Fugu must be prepared by a licensed chef: eat it in a restaurant, never self-cater.
- The Kanmon tunnel closes overnight (06:00–20:00); check the last return before you cross.
- Chofu sights close around 16:30–17:00 and some are closed Mondays: check before the bus ride.
- 13 Aug fireworks night fills every hotel in the city: book weeks ahead or avoid the date.
