Bloomington, IndianaBloomington

Give Bloomington 2 nights: one for the IU campus and downtown, one for Lake Monroe or Brown County. Skip it entirely if you want big-city sights.

Bloomington is the largest city in Southern Indiana and the home of Indiana University, so the trip is built around a walkable limestone campus, a compact courthouse square of bars and music venues, and green space at Lake Monroe and Brown County within a 30-minute drive. It is a college town first: come for a game weekend, a show, or a base for the surrounding hills, not for a checklist of monuments. Two nights covers it; one night is enough if you only want the campus and downtown.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown and campus are walkable and flat; the B-Line Trail is a paved walking and cycling route along an old rail line. Bloomington Transit buses run citywide but many routes are only every 30–60 min, and only campus routes 6 and 9 run on Sundays; single ride about US$1 (check). IU Campus Bus is free and open to the public. Electric scooters are common. A car helps for Lake Monroe, Brown County and the forest; campus parking needs a permit, about US$6 a day from the Indiana Memorial Union (check).

Door-to-door, not ride time

Nashville and Brown County

go

Door to door: About 30 min each way

Lake Monroe

go

Door to door: About 20–25 min

Drive about 16 km (10 mi) southeast to Paynetown or Fairfax recreation areas

Indiana's largest lake: boating, swimming and fishing; day-use areas may charge a fee (check).

Hoosier National Forest

caution

Door to door: About 40–60 min

Drive south on SR 37 toward Bedford, then forest roads

Trails and the Hickory Ridge fire tower; services are thin, so carry water and fuel.

Columbus, Indiana

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive SR 46 east about 65 km (40 mi)

Known for modern architecture; pair it with a Brown County stop.

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Drive I-69 north about 80 km (50 mi), or take the Miller Trailways/Hoosier Ride bus from the downtown transit centre

Big-city museums and food; easy to combine with an airport run.

Downtown / Courthouse Square

Walk to restaurants, bars and the Buskirk-Chumley Theater; best for a short stay without a car.

Near IU campus (Kirkwood, Indiana Ave)

Hotels and the Indiana Memorial Union; 5–15 min walk to campus sights and the Sample Gates.

East side / College Mall

Chain hotels, free parking, 10 min drive to downtown; good if you have a car and want cheaper rooms.

West side / I-69 and SR 37

Highway motels and big-box stores; cheapest beds, but you drive everywhere.

Watch out

Safety

Bloomington is a low-risk college town; the real issues are game-weekend crowds, campus parking tickets and unlit rural roads at night. Standard US city sense around the square after midnight.
  • Game weekends (football in fall, basketball in winter) fill hotels and raise rates: book weeks ahead or avoid.
  • Campus parking is regulated and ticketed; use a garage downtown instead of hunting street meters.
  • Summer is humid with highs around 30°C (86°F); plan indoor or lake time midday.
  • Some rural roads and I-69 exits have few services: fuel up before heading out.
  • Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink.
