Stay 1–2 nights: one for tea country and town, two if you add Horton Plains. Skip it if you only want beaches.
Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 m in the central highlands, so it is cool, wet and green rather than tropical. It is a tea town with a small walkable centre, a lake, a few colonial-era buildings and the trailhead for Horton Plains. Most travellers arrive on the hill train to Nanu Oya and leave the next day.
