Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 m in the central highlands, so it is cool, wet and green rather than tropical. It is a tea town with a small walkable centre, a lake, a few colonial-era buildings and the trailhead for Horton Plains. Most travellers arrive on the hill train to Nanu Oya and leave the next day.

- Greeting: 'Ayubowan' (Sinhala) or 'Vanakkam' (Tamil) with palms together; avoid: Kissing on the cheek
- Temples: White clothes, shoes off, walk clockwise; avoid: Posing with your back to the Buddha; pointing feet at statues
- Hands: Right hand to give and eat; avoid: Left hand for food or money
- Head wobble: A side-to-side nod means yes or OK; avoid: Taking it as no
- Dress: Swimwear only on the beach; shoulders and knees covered in towns; avoid: Topless bathing
- Buses: Leave front seats for monks, the elderly and pregnant women; avoid: Sitting next to a monk (women)
Scams and watch-outs
- It rains often and nights are cold (single digits); bring a jacket, not just beach clothes.
- Road times from Colombo or Kandy are unreliable: 180 km can take 5–6 h.
- Reserve hill-train seats ahead; unreserved coaches fill up.
- Horton Plains needs an early start — mist and rain close the view by mid-morning.
Nuwara Eliya is calm and safe by day; the real risks are cold, rain, slippery trails and slow mountain roads. Keep valuables out of sight in the market and agree tuk-tuk fares before you get in.
