It replaced the 144-hour rule in December 2024, which some older pages still quote. Use the transit lane at immigration, show the onward ticket, and check the current nationality list. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Qingdao is a German-era port city on the Yellow Sea, 2 h 50 min from Beijing by high-speed rail. The old town, the beaches and Laoshan Mountain sit in a compact coastal strip, so two or three nights covers the core without rushing. It is a summer city: July and August are warm and wet, and the coast fills with domestic holidaymakers.

Getting around

Metro is the reliable option: Line 3 runs from Qingdao Railway Station to Qingdao North, Line 2 covers the south shore and May 4th Square, Line 4 links the old town with the Laoshan Scenic Area entrance, and Line 8 reaches the airport. Buses cost ¥1, or ¥2 air-conditioned. Taxis start at ¥10; Didi works with a data SIM. Cycling is impractical: the city is hilly and there are few bike lanes.

Watch out

Safety

Qingdao is orderly and low-risk for tourists. The real issues are summer crowds, sea swimming outside marked areas, and paying by phone — set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival.
  • Summer weekends and the July–August peak fill the beaches and the old town; book beds ahead.
  • Taxis can be hard to flag down in peak season — use the metro or a ride-hailing app.
  • The airport is about 60 km out; allow 1–1.5 h by road and do not cut it fine for a flight.
  • Air quality varies; check the daily reading if you have respiratory issues.
  • Card and mobile payment: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly — many small vendors do not take foreign cards.
