Give Qingdao 2–3 nights: one full day for the old town and Zhanqiao, one for Badaguan and the coast, one for Laoshan if you have it.
Qingdao is a German-era port city on the Yellow Sea, 2 h 50 min from Beijing by high-speed rail. The old town, the beaches and Laoshan Mountain sit in a compact coastal strip, so two or three nights covers the core without rushing. It is a summer city: July and August are warm and wet, and the coast fills with domestic holidaymakers.

Get around
Metro is the reliable option: Line 3 runs from Qingdao Railway Station to Qingdao North, Line 2 covers the south shore and May 4th Square, Line 4 links the old town with the Laoshan Scenic Area entrance, and Line 8 reaches the airport. Buses cost ¥1, or ¥2 air-conditioned. Taxis start at ¥10; Didi works with a data SIM. Cycling is impractical: the city is hilly and there are few bike lanes.
