WittenbergLutherstadt Wittenberg

Give Wittenberg one full day and one night: the Reformation sights sit inside a 15-minute walk, and the town empties after the last Berlin ICE.

Wittenberg is a small town on the Elbe, 45 minutes by ICE from Berlin, where Martin Luther taught, preached and is buried. The Luther memorials are a UNESCO World Heritage site and the old town is compact and pedestrian. Most travellers see it as a day trip; sleeping one night lets you walk the centre after the coaches leave.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

The old town is pedestrian and all the main sights are within a 15-minute walk of each other. Vetter Bus runs five town lines; bus 300/304 links the Hauptbahnhof with Schlossplatz. Taxis are short-hop and cheap. A bike is useful only for the Elbe meadows and Piesteritz.

Watch out

Safety

Wittenberg is a quiet, low-risk town; the real issues are winter ice on the cobbles, dark riverside paths at night and pickpockets only around the station at busy times.
  • Two towns share a similar name: Wittenberge is in Brandenburg, 100 km (62 mi) away. Check your ticket.
  • Guided tours at 14:00 can be cancelled if fewer than 10 people turn up.
  • Several church and museum interiors close earlier in winter (Nov–Mar); check before you travel.
  • Sunday shopping is limited; supermarkets at the station are the reliable option.
