Wittenberg is a small town on the Elbe, 45 minutes by ICE from Berlin, where Martin Luther taught, preached and is buried. The Luther memorials are a UNESCO World Heritage site and the old town is compact and pedestrian. Most travellers see it as a day trip; sleeping one night lets you walk the centre after the coaches leave.

Get around
The old town is pedestrian and all the main sights are within a 15-minute walk of each other. Vetter Bus runs five town lines; bus 300/304 links the Hauptbahnhof with Schlossplatz. Taxis are short-hop and cheap. A bike is useful only for the Elbe meadows and Piesteritz.
