Klosterneuburg
Go as a half-day or one-night stop from Vienna: the monastery is the reason, the Danube bank and vineyards are the bonus. Skip if you have under 3 days in Vienna.
Klosterneuburg sits 12 km northwest of Vienna on the Danube, reachable on the S40 suburban rail in about 25 minutes. Its draw is Stift Klosterneuburg, a working Augustinian monastery founded in 1114 with the Verduner Altar and a winery that has operated since the same year. Most visitors come for a half day; one night is enough if you want the vineyards and the Danube bank at a slow pace.

- The monastery is a working religious house: some areas are tour-only and hours change between summer and winter.
- Danube swimming is only safe when the river is not in flood; the current is strong and good swimming skills are required.
- Sunday and holiday opening is limited outside the monastery; many shops close.
- The S40 runs roughly every 30 minutes off-peak; check the last train back to Vienna before a late dinner.
