Palisade is a small Colorado farming town on Interstate 70, about 15 minutes east of Grand Junction. It grows most of Colorado's wine grapes and ships the state's peaches. The town itself is a short Main Street you walk in an hour; the orchards, wineries and trailheads need a car or a bike. It works as a one- or two-night stop on a western Colorado drive, or as a quieter, cheaper base than Aspen or Vail.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. Wineries, orchards and the Mount Garfield trailhead are 3–15 km out on county roads with no useful bus: drive, or rent a bike and use the Colorado Riverfront Trail. Grand Junction has the nearest Amtrak station (California Zephyr) and Greyhound stop.

Watch out

Safety

Palisade is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are heat and dehydration on the mesas, drink-driving on rural wine roads, and winter ice on I-70.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C; hike Mount Garfield early and carry more water than you think you need.
  • Wine tasting means driving between rural wineries: pick a designated driver or book a shuttle.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the mesas and in the canyon country east of town.
  • Many tasting rooms and orchard stands cut hours or close from November to March: check before you drive out.
