Give Palisade one night, two if you drink wine: base on Main Street, drive to the wineries, and go May–June or September, not July–August heat.
Palisade is a small Colorado farming town on Interstate 70, about 15 minutes east of Grand Junction. It grows most of Colorado's wine grapes and ships the state's peaches. The town itself is a short Main Street you walk in an hour; the orchards, wineries and trailheads need a car or a bike. It works as a one- or two-night stop on a western Colorado drive, or as a quieter, cheaper base than Aspen or Vail.
