Jūrmala is a 33 km strip of resort town between the Lielupe river and the Gulf of Riga, 30 minutes by suburban train from Riga Central. The beach and the wooden villas are the point; the centre of gravity is Majori, where the train stops and Jomas iela runs to the sand. Most travellers do it as a day trip. A night makes sense for spa hotels, families with small children, or anyone who wants the beach before the day-trippers arrive.

Getting around

Suburban trains on the Riga–Tukums line stop along the whole strip roughly every 30 min; Majori is the central stop. Buy tickets at the station or on the app. Local buses cover the same corridor. Walking works inside one district; distances between districts are 3–6 km, so use the train or a bike rather than walking the full length.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe by European city standards; the real issues are cold water, no lifeguards on most of the beach, and tourist-priced restaurants on Jomas iela. Watch for bikes on the promenade.
  • Driving into Jūrmala costs €2 (≈ US$3); cameras check it and the fine is €70 (≈ US$85).
  • The sea stays cold even in August; there are no lifeguards along most of the beach.
  • Some beach sections near the Lielupe estuary are quieter and less supervised; keep an eye on children.
  • Restaurants on Jomas iela are priced for tourists: check the menu board before sitting.
