Drumnadrochit is a village of about 1,100 on the west shore of Loch Ness, on the A82 between Inverness (15 miles north) and Fort William. It exists for two reasons: the ruins of Urquhart Castle just south, and the Loch Ness Monster legend, which fills the coach tours. Everything in the village is walkable; the castle is a 30-minute walk or a short bus ride along a busy road with a sidewalk.

Getting around

The village is small and flat enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. The A82 to the castle is busy but has a sidewalk; buses 917 and 919 stop at both the village and the castle. A car makes the glen and side roads far easier.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village. The real risks are fast traffic on the A82, wet and icy pavements in winter, and midges on still evenings from June to August.
  • Buses on the A82 are infrequent, especially on Sundays: check the timetable before you rely on one.
  • The A82 has fast traffic and no lighting in places; walk the castle stretch in daylight.
  • Many hotels and campsites close from November to March: book ahead and confirm opening.
  • Mobile signal has dead spots on the approach roads; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
