Negril
Base in Negril for 4–5 nights if you want beach days plus cliff sunsets; skip it on a short trip that also wants Kingston or the east coast.
Negril is a two-part town: a long white-sand beach running north from the roundabout, and a cliff strip along West End Road where the sunsets happen. It is flatter and slower than Montego Bay, and most people stay put. Four to five nights covers beach, cliffs, one boat trip and one day out; two nights only works if Negril is your single stop.

Getting around
Route taxis are the cheap option: about JMD 200 along the beachfront road to the town roundabout, roughly JMD 100 more for points past it toward the cliffs, and about double at night (2026 estimate — check). Set the price before you get in. Charter taxis quote US$10+ per person for the same run. The beach itself is walkable: the far end to town takes under an hour along the sand.

Safety
- Agree every taxi fare before entering; drivers who are not route taxis may tell you route taxis are unsafe to push you to a charter.
- Cliff jumping at the West End bars has caused deaths and serious injuries, including among people jumping for tips.
- Drugs are illegal in Jamaica; you will be offered them, and a plain no is enough.
- Hurricane Melissa hit western Jamaica in 2025: confirm your hotel is open and taking bookings before you pay.
- USD is accepted almost everywhere, but change is often given in Jamaican dollars at a poor rate.
