Szeged is Hungary's third-largest city and its sunniest, on the Tisza river 171 km south of Budapest. It was rebuilt almost entirely after the 1879 flood, so the centre is a compact grid of Art Nouveau and historicist palaces around a huge cathedral square. It is a university town, which keeps prices and nightlife student-level. Two nights covers the sights; the Open Air Theatre festival and the September fish-soup festival are the reasons to add more.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable: Dóm tér to Széchenyi tér is about 10 minutes on foot. Trams, trolleybuses and buses share one ticket system; buy from kiosks or the driver (front door), and cards work on trams. Taxis within the city run about 1,000–2,000 Ft; Bolt works with an app.

Watch out

Safety

Szeged is a safe, low-crime city; the real issues are summer heat, unlit riverside paths at night and taxis without a meter. Keep to the centre after dark and use an app or a called cab.
  • Tickets bought on board cost more than from a kiosk, and you must board at the front door.
  • Some taxi drivers do not speak English; agree the fare or use an app.
  • The Dóm and other churches close to tourists during services.
  • Summer afternoons on Dóm tér are exposed; there is little shade.
