Szeged
Give Szeged 2 nights: one full day for the Dóm, the synagogue and the riverfront, plus a half-day for the paprika and salami museums.
Szeged is Hungary's third-largest city and its sunniest, on the Tisza river 171 km south of Budapest. It was rebuilt almost entirely after the 1879 flood, so the centre is a compact grid of Art Nouveau and historicist palaces around a huge cathedral square. It is a university town, which keeps prices and nightlife student-level. Two nights covers the sights; the Open Air Theatre festival and the September fish-soup festival are the reasons to add more.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Jó napot, handshake; avoid: First names with elders
- Names: Family name first when written; avoid: Assuming the second name is the surname
- Toasts: Eye contact; avoid: Clinking beer glasses with older people
- History: Listen; avoid: Joking about Trianon or 1956
- Home visit: Shoes off; flowers or wine; avoid: Refusing food repeatedly
Scams and watch-outs
- Tickets bought on board cost more than from a kiosk, and you must board at the front door.
- Some taxi drivers do not speak English; agree the fare or use an app.
- The Dóm and other churches close to tourists during services.
- Summer afternoons on Dóm tér are exposed; there is little shade.
Szeged is a safe, low-crime city; the real issues are summer heat, unlit riverside paths at night and taxis without a meter. Keep to the centre after dark and use an app or a called cab.

No embassies in Szeged; the US, UK and most others are in Budapest. Consular help for a lost passport means a trip north.
Tourist information is at Dugonics tér 2, north of the university; a summer pavilion also runs on the Széchenyi tér walkway near the Town Hall.
