Base in Cēsis for 1–2 nights: castle complex and Old Town in half a day, Gauja National Park trails the rest. Skip if you only have Riga time.
Cēsis is a small historic town on the edge of Gauja National Park, about 100 km east of Riga, reachable by hourly bus or a handful of trains. The castle complex, St. John's Church tower and the cobbled Old Town fill half a day; the national park, ski hill and brewery fill the rest. Most travellers come for one night, or as a day trip paired with Sigulda.

Getting around
The centre is small and flat: walk everywhere. Local buses run but departures are sparse, so walking usually beats waiting. Taxis are cheap; agree the fare or check the meter before you set off. For Gauja National Park trailheads and the ski hill you need a car, taxi or bike.

Safety
- Taxi meters: some drivers bump the price with a button press — agree the fare first or use an app.
- Castle complex hours change by season (May–Sep daily; Oct–Apr shorter, closed Mondays) — check before you go.
- St. John's Church tower is only open limited hours (weekends) and the top view is partly fenced.
- Trail surfaces in Gauja National Park get muddy after rain; wear shoes with grip.
- Many small shops and cafés close early in the evening outside summer.
