Give Menlo Park one day on foot, not a base: downtown is 10 blocks, most kitchens close by 20:00–21:00, and Palo Alto or Redwood City covers the evening.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Menlo Park is a small, tree-lined Peninsula town between San Francisco and San Jose, known for its 1867 Caltrain depot, a walkable Santa Cruz Avenue downtown, Kepler's Books and the Meta campus on the bay side. Sights are few and spread out, so most visitors walk the centre in half a day and use Caltrain for Palo Alto, Stanford and Redwood City.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: Santa Cruz Avenue runs about 10 blocks, a 15–20 min walk from the Caltrain station to Camp Fremont Park. Caltrain, SamTrans and the free Stanford Marguerite shuttle cover the region; Uber and Lyft fill the gaps. A car helps for Sand Hill Road, SLAC and Bedwell Bayfront Park.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Palo Alto and Stanford

go

Door to door: 10–25 min

Caltrain one stop, or the free Stanford Marguerite shuttle

University campus, Cantor Arts Center and University Avenue; the easiest add-on.

Redwood City

go

Door to door: 15–20 min

Caltrain south, 2–3 stops

Better evening food and bar choice than Menlo Park.

Half Moon Bay

go

Door to door: 30–40 min

Drive CA-84 over the hill, or rideshare

Coast, beaches and a harbour; no useful public transport.

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Caltrain to 4th & King, about 45–60 min, then Muni or walk

A full day; go early and check the last train back.

Burlingame

caution

Door to door: 35–45 min

Caltrain north, about 25–30 min

Mainly an airport-side hotel and restaurant strip; skip unless you fly out next morning.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Santa Cruz Avenue

Walk to the station, cafés and shops; quiet after about 21:00. Best for one or two nights without a car.

El Camino Real corridor

Chain hotels with parking along CA-82; 10–20 min walk to downtown, easy drive to Stanford.

Sand Hill Road / west side

Business hotels near SLAC and Stanford; car or rideshare needed for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Menlo Park is a low-crime, well-lit suburb and walking downtown in daylight is easy. The real risks are petty theft from parked cars, fast traffic on El Camino Real and US-101, and unlit stretches of the bayfront trail after dusk.
  • Downtown empties early: many businesses close by 20:00–21:00, so plan dinner in Palo Alto or Redwood City.
  • Caltrain runs roughly hourly outside commute peaks; check the last train back before a late evening.
  • Meta's campus is a working office, not a visitor attraction: the sign is viewable from the street only.
  • Summer mornings bring bay fog; afternoons are usually clear.
