Visegrád is a castle town of about 1,800 people on the right bank of the Danube, 40 km north of Budapest in the Danube Bend. The Upper Castle sits on a hill above the river, the Royal Palace ruins are in the town centre, and the whole place is walkable in a day. Most travellers come as a day trip from Budapest; a single night buys you an early castle visit before the buses arrive.

Getting around
No local public transport. The town is small enough to walk, but the Upper Castle is a steep 20–30 min climb from the centre. Regional Volánbusz services and a weekend hop-on/hop-off tourist bus link the sights, the ferry pier and the regional bus stop. Taxis are available but limited.

Safety
- The Upper Castle is a steep uphill walk; wear shoes with grip and carry water in summer.
- Some sites have seasonal hours and close on Mondays outside summer — check before you go.
- The nearest train station is Nagymaros-Visegrád, on the opposite bank; you must take the ferry across.
- Last buses back to Budapest leave in the early evening; check the timetable before your afternoon.
- Card payment is not universal in small shops and cafés; carry some forint.
