Batumiბათუმი

Choose Batumi over inland Georgia for a Black Sea beach and promenade stop with a casino-town nightlife scene; best Jun–Sep, one to two nights unless you're purely here for the beach.

Batumi is Georgia's main Black Sea resort, on the southwest coast near the Turkish border. The seafront has a long promenade, modern glass towers and a large botanical garden on the coastal cliffs north of town. It combines a beach-and-casino strip with an older centre of Art Nouveau buildings a few streets back.

  • Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
  • Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
  • Georgia ↗Many passports enter visa-free for a long stay; if yours needs a visa, apply only on the official e-visa portal.
  • Georgia ↗Do not plan travel to Abkhazia or South Ossetia: crossing their boundary lines from Georgian-controlled land is treated as illegal entry, and many governments advise against it.
  • Georgia ↗In Orthodox churches women cover their heads and shoulders and wear a skirt or a wrap; men remove hats and avoid shorts.
  • Georgia ↗Carry Georgian lari in small notes for minibuses, markets and the metro card; cards work in most Tbilisi cafés and shops but not everywhere outside the capital.

Watch out

Safety

Georgia has low violent crime and Batumi is no exception; the main risks are sea conditions and overpriced nightlife venues — confirm prices before you order.
  • Summer beach-season prices rise sharply and rooms sell out; book well ahead for Jun–Sep.
  • Batumi has some of Georgia's heaviest rainfall in autumn and winter; pack for it if travelling outside summer.
  • The Black Sea can have strong currents and jellyfish blooms in late summer; check local flags or ask your hotel before swimming.
  • Casino-strip nightlife draws touts and overpriced drinks menus; confirm prices before ordering.
