Yerevan Երևան
Yerevan is a compact, hilly city with a hot summer: do the Cascade, Matenadaran and the memorial before 11:00, sit indoors at midday, and take the square and the streets after 18:00.

- Armenia ↗Armenia's land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against or restrict travel near the Azerbaijan border (parts of Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik and Tavush). Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Yerevan and its day-trip ring.
- Armenia ↗Check entry rules for your passport on the official Armenian foreign ministry pages; many nationalities enter visa-free and others use the e-visa, but only apply on the government portal.
- Armenia ↗Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries; men remove hats, and some women wear a scarf over the head.
- Ararat Valley ↗Mount Ararat is often hidden by haze from late morning, especially Jun–Sep: go early and treat the view as a bonus, not the plan.
Overview
Yerevan's sights fit in four short clusters inside about 4 km, and taxis are cheap. The trips that go wrong are the ones that climb the Cascade at 14:00 in July, arrive at 03:00 with no plan for the door, or visit Tsitsernakaberd on a closure day without checking. Four clusters cover a first visit; Garni–Geghard and Khor Virap are trips away from one kept bed.
Fits
- Short city breaks
- Monastery and manuscript trips
- Evening wine-and-cafe walkers
Does not fit
- Midday walkers in July
- Wheelchair users on the Cascade steps
- Travellers wanting sea or beaches
- 2 days
- Republic Square + Cascade, Matenadaran and Tsitsernakaberd
- 3 days
- Four clusters, mornings and evenings only
- 5 days
- Four clusters + Garni–Geghard day-trip + one slow day
- Don't confuse
- Republic Square is the centre of Kentron district; the Cascade is a separate complex about 1 km north, and Tsitsernakaberd is a car ride west.

- Mid
- ֏25,000–50,000 excl. bed / day
- High
- ֏50,000+ excl. bed / day
- IC card
- No transit card needed: taxis and walking; the metro is a single line and a token or card ride is cheap.
- Cash rule
- Keep ֏10,000 in small notes; withdraw at bank ATMs or inside malls, not on dark side streets.
Arrive
EVN to Kentron: one ride-hail car or an official airport taxi, 20–45 minutes at any hour — the risk is the arrival time, because many flights land between 01:00 and 05:00 and the hotel door must be waiting.
Move
- Default
- Walk inside a cluster; ride-hailing car between clusters.
- Passes
- No pass. A short taxi ride inside the centre is a few thousand dram; check the fare in the app before you ride.
- Last trains
- Metro runs a single line with a fixed daytime schedule (verify the hours); taxis run all night.
- Other modes
- Other modes (Rome2Rio)
Luggage
- Lockers
- Few public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
- Forwarding
- No forwarding service culture; keep the big bag at the Yerevan hotel for trips away.
- Dead zone
- Early-morning flights: ask the hotel to book the airport car the night before.
Clusters
Evening cluster: the square and its fountain show after dusk, Vernissage market on weekends, cafés on Abovyan and Tumanyan; flat and walkable, with little shade in July.

Late-afternoon cluster: climb the Cascade steps with a coffee, view Ararat at sunset if the sky is clear, then Northern Avenue and the Opera park after; steps are the cost.

Morning cluster: manuscripts at the Matenadaran right at opening, then Mashtots Avenue cafés; a short uphill walk from the centre, best before the midday sun.
rescue coverage 100% · max p90 6.5′ · 90m
Morning cluster by car: the Genocide Memorial and museum on the hill above the Hrazdan gorge; allow 90 minutes, dress quietly, and go on a day the museum is open.

Days
Mornings for the hill sights, afternoons indoors, evenings for the square; the last day ends with the bags already in the car.
Places
Go late afternoon: take the escalators inside up, walk the terraces down, and be on the top terrace before sunset if Ararat is clear; the outdoor stairs are free and always open, the galleries have their own hours.
Morning by car, 90 minutes: the memorial and the museum together; dress covered, keep voices low, and check that the museum is open on your date. On April 24 expect road closures and very large crowds.
Eat
Sit-down Armenian lunch or dinner on Pushkin Street: dolma, khorovats and local wine; book a table for dinner and weekends, walk in at lunch on weekdays.
Sleep
First-timers: within 10 minutes of the square and the Cascade; choose a hotel with a 24-hour desk and a street the car can enter, since flights often land at 02:00.
Desk: staffed 24h
Quieter evenings, larger hotels with lifts and a door the car can reach; the Cascade is a walk away and the square is 10 minutes south.
Desk: staffed 24h
Survive

- Heat (Jun–Aug): AC stop every 60–90 minutes; drink water; sun on the Cascade steps is strong.
- Emergency: 112.
Red lines
- Tsitsernakaberd: quiet voices, covered shoulders and knees, no selfies at the flame.
- Churches: cover shoulders and knees; take off hats.
- Do not photograph military sites or people at close range without asking.
Practical
- Toilets: cafés, malls and museums; carry small coins.
- Tap water in Yerevan is commonly drunk; bottled water is cheap if you prefer it.
