Delmenhorst

Skip as a base: Delmenhorst is a half-day stop between Bremen and Oldenburg. Sleep in Bremen and come out only for the Nordwolle museum.

Delmenhorst is an industrial town of about 72,000 people between Bremen and Oldenburg, first recorded in 1247 and built on the Nordwolle wool works. The old factory site is now a museum of industrial culture, and the Graft park and the water tower fill an afternoon. Most travellers pass through on the train; the town works as a short stop, not a base.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end. Bikes are the local default and paths are good; Delbus runs the town buses from the ZOB beside the station, with VBN zone fares. Taxis wait at the station.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30 min

Regional train from Delmenhorst station, about 15–20 min

The obvious pairing: sleep in Bremen and visit Delmenhorst, not the reverse.

Oldenburg

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Regional train west, about 25–30 min

Compact old town and a good half-day.

Osnabrück

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Train via Bremen or Osnabrück connections, roughly 1.5 h

Better as a stop on a longer rail leg than a return trip.

Bad Bentheim

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Train toward the Dutch border, about 2 h with a change

Castle and sandstone town; long for a day return.

Lingen

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Train west via Oldenburg or Leer, about 2 h

Combine with Bad Bentheim rather than doing both as separate days.

Nordhorn

skip

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Train to Bad Bentheim then bus, about 2.5 h

Too slow for a day return from Delmenhorst.

Wietmarschen

skip

Door to door: About 3 h

Train and bus via Lingen or Nordhorn

Only worth it if you are already in the Emsland.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, ordinary German town. The only recurring note is the area around the central station at night: keep to the lit side, and use the usual big-city precautions.
  • Use normal care around the central station at night; groups hang around there.
  • Many restaurants and the market close by early evening or 13:00; plan meals accordingly.
  • Some museums and the water tower open only on selected days: check before you travel.

Cash still works best in small bakeries and snack bars; cards are fine in hotels and supermarkets.
