Udon Thani is the biggest city in northern Isaan and the practical hub for this corner of Thailand: a 50-minute flight or an overnight bus or train from Bangkok, and the gateway to Nong Khai and the Lao border. The city itself is a low-rise, easy-going place built around a lake park, malls and a large expat community. The reason to stop is what surrounds it: the UNESCO site of Ban Chiang, the pink water-lily lake at Kumphawapi, and sandstone country at Phu Phrabat. Two nights covers the day trips without rushing; one night is enough if you are only passing through to Laos.

Getting around

No public bus network worth using. Numbered songthaews (pickup trucks) run fixed routes for ฿8–10 per trip, ฿10 outside the ring road. Grab works and is the simplest option: from about ฿60 for a short ride, motorbike Grab cheaper still. Tuk-tuks should cost ฿30–50 for a short hop — agree the price first. Bicycles rent at the northeast corner of Nong Prajak Park for ฿20/hour. For the outlying sights you need a car, a hired taxi or a tour: rent a car in town or at the airport.

Watch out

Safety

Udon Thani is a calm, low-crime city and the main risks are on the road: unlicensed motorbike rentals, tuk-tuk fare games and long-distance night buses. Use Grab after dark, keep bags zipped in the markets, and check air quality in Mar–Apr.
  • Agree tuk-tuk and samlor fares before you get in; ฿100 (≈ US$4) for a ฿30 (≈ under US$1) trip is a known trick near the bus station.
  • March and April bring the region's smoke haze from field burning — check air quality if you have breathing problems.
  • Cross-border buses to Vientiane may not wait at the border for visa-on-arrival queues: have your Lao visa in advance.
  • Rent a motorbike only with a proper licence and a helmet; police checkpoints are common and insurance is void without one.
