Nong Khai is a small Mekong town on Thailand's Lao border, 20 km from Vientiane, and the easiest place in the country to slow down. The draw is not a checklist of sights: it is the riverfront, the sculpture park at Sala Kaew Khu, the Tha Sadet market and the Isaan food. Two nights covers it; most travellers pass through on the way to or from Laos.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable, and part of the riverfront is pedestrian-only. Tuk-tuks cover the town for 20–30 baht per person; expect 40–70 baht to the Friendship Bridge. Bicycles rent for about 50 baht a day and motorbikes for about 200 baht a day; you need a passport copy. There is no city bus network.

Watch out

Safety

Nong Khai is calm and low-crime; the real risks are traffic on the highways, unlicensed motorbike rental, and the heat in March–May. Keep to lit streets at night and agree tuk-tuk fares before you get in.
  • Tuk-tuk drivers at the Friendship Bridge quote far above the normal 40–50 baht: walk a short distance and flag a moving one.
  • Rent a motorbike only with an IDP and a helmet; police check licences on the main roads.
  • Border rules and visa-on-arrival for Laos change: confirm at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge before you set out.
  • March–April brings heat and crop-burning haze; the Mekong is at its lowest and the river beach appears.
