Khon Kaen is the biggest city in central Isaan and a transport junction on the line to Nong Khai and Laos. The centre is a wide-street grid built for cars, so you move by songthaew or Grab, not on foot. Come for the lake, the nine-storey stupa, Isaan food and Mudmee silk, and treat it as a base for Phu Kradung and the silk villages.

Getting around

Numbered songthaews run fixed routes for a flat 9 baht a trip (pay on exit, Thai-only signage); routes 2, 3 and 8 cover Central Plaza, the university and the centre. Tuk-tuks quote 40–50 baht inside the city. Grab is the easy option: roughly 55–65 baht for a few kilometres in the centre, 90–100 baht to the ring-road bus terminal.

Watch out

Safety

Khon Kaen is a low-crime provincial capital and generally safe for tourists; the real annoyances are traffic on the wide grid streets, unlit pavements at night, and tuk-tuk or bar bills with no posted price — agree the fare or total before you commit.
  • The long-distance bus terminal (Baw Kaw Saw 3) sits on the ring road about 8 km south of the centre: a tuk-tuk or Grab into town can cost more than a short bus ticket, so budget for it.
  • Walking is unpleasant on the wide grid streets; use songthaews, Grab or a rented car rather than planning on foot.
  • Songthaew signs are in Thai only; ask your hotel to write the route number and destination in Thai.
  • March to May brings heat and regional smoke; check air quality before booking outdoor days.
  • Alcohol sales in shops are restricted to set hours (commonly 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–24:00); plan your beer run.
