Eau Claire

Give Eau Claire two nights: one for downtown and Water Street, one for Carson Park and the Chippewa River trail. Skip it as a day trip from Minneapolis.

Eau Claire is a small river city in northwest Wisconsin, about 145 km east of the Twin Cities on Interstate 94. It is a music-and-trail town rather than a landmark town: downtown and Water Street hold the food, bars and venues, Carson Park holds the museums, and the Chippewa River State Trail runs from the middle of town. Two nights covers it; a third only if you add Chippewa Falls or a festival weekend.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread across the valley and the bus system is thin. Downtown, Water Street and the university lower campus are walkable and linked by the river trail; the buses carry bike racks. In winter, plan on driving or taxis.

Watch out

Safety

Eau Claire is a low-crime small city; the real risks are winter driving, icy sidewalks and late-night drinking on Water Street. Keep to lit streets downtown after the bars close.
  • Winter driving: ice and snow are routine from December to March — check road conditions before a day trip.
  • The Greyhound stop is at a McDonald's on the far northwest edge of town, about 11 km (6.8 mi) from downtown: arrange a taxi or ride before you arrive.
  • Festival weekends (Country Jam, CountryFest, Rockfest) fill hotels for miles — book early or pick another weekend.
  • Some downtown venues and museums keep limited hours outside summer: check before you go.
