Eau Claire is a small river city in northwest Wisconsin, about 145 km east of the Twin Cities on Interstate 94. It is a music-and-trail town rather than a landmark town: downtown and Water Street hold the food, bars and venues, Carson Park holds the museums, and the Chippewa River State Trail runs from the middle of town. Two nights covers it; a third only if you add Chippewa Falls or a festival weekend.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread across the valley and the bus system is thin. Downtown, Water Street and the university lower campus are walkable and linked by the river trail; the buses carry bike racks. In winter, plan on driving or taxis.
