Stockholm is a village of about 66 people on the Wisconsin shore of Lake Pepin, the wide natural lake in the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1854 by settlers from Karlskoga, Sweden, and today it is three blocks of shops and cafés between Highway 35 and the water. Most travellers see it in two to four hours as a stop between Prescott and Pepin, or as a lunch break on the drive from the Twin Cities to La Crosse.

Getting around

You need a car. There is no bus or train to Stockholm; the village itself is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, and Highway 35 is the only through road. Park on the shoulder or in the small lots and walk.

Safety

Very low crime in a village of about 66 people. The real risks are Highway 35 traffic, unlit rural roads at night, winter ice and closed businesses when you arrive.
  • Highway 35 carries fast traffic through the village: cross at the marked spots, not mid-block.
  • Many businesses are seasonal or closed Monday–Wednesday: check hours the same day before you drive.
  • Cell coverage is patchy along parts of the lake shore; download an offline map.
  • Winter driving on WI-35 can be icy with lake-effect snow squalls: check road conditions.
