Gniezno is the first capital of Poland and the seat of its first archbishopric, 50 km from Poznań. The draw is one building: the Assumption and St. Adalbert's Cathedral on Wzgórze Lecha, with the Romanesque bronze door from about 1170 and the relics of St. Adalbert. Everything else in the centre is small and walkable, so most travellers see it in a few hours and sleep in Poznań.

Safety

Gniezno is a small, calm city and violent crime is rare. Watch traffic on the roads around the station, keep an eye on your bag in crowds at festivals, and use licensed taxis or apps rather than unmarked cars.
  • The Bronze Door and the cathedral crypt can only be visited with a guide: check times at the cathedral or on wzgorzelecha.pl before you plan the day.
  • Cathedral and museum hours shorten from November to April and both close on Sundays and holidays.
  • Some city bus lines run only a few times a day, mostly at peak hours.
  • Sunday trading is limited in Poland: buy what you need on Saturday.
