Poznań is Poland's fifth-largest city and one of its oldest, sitting roughly halfway between Warsaw and Berlin on the main east–west rail line. The Old Town and cathedral island are compact and walkable; most travellers use it as a two-night stop between the two capitals or as a base for the Wielkopolskie region. It is a trade-fair and university city, so midweek hotel prices swing with the fair calendar.

Getting around

Trams and buses (MPK) cover the centre; buy a 24-hour ticket if you'll ride more than three times. Paper tickets are time-based (15/45/90 min) and must be validated on board. The Old Town, cathedral island and Citadel Park are all walkable from each other. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap by Western European standards.

Poznań is a safe, low-crime city by European standards. Watch for pickpockets on trams and around the station, and for unlicensed taxis at the rank; use an app or a licensed cab.
  • Validate your ticket on boarding; an unvalidated ticket counts as no ticket and fines run 120–240 zł.
  • Poznań Główny's layout and platform numbering are confusing — arrive early for a booked train.
  • Hotel prices spike during major trade fairs at the fairgrounds; check dates before booking.
