Shingo新郷

Skip unless you are fascinated by the Jesus Christ tomb legend: a 30-minute stop on a drive through Aomori, not a destination.

Shingo is a tiny village in southeastern Aomori known for a single curiosity: a tomb that locals claim holds Jesus Christ. The story is a 20th-century invention, but the site includes a small museum and a meditation path. The rest of the village offers little else for travellers. Most visitors come as a short detour from Hachinohe or on a drive through the countryside.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. Roads can be icy in winter; drive carefully.
  • The Christ's Tomb legend is not taken seriously by historians; treat it as a local curiosity.
  • The pyramids are a short hike up a dirt road; not signposted well.
  • No restaurants or shops in the village; bring food and water.
  • Winter snow can make roads impassable.
