Fredrikstad is a river-mouth town 90 km south of Oslo whose 1567 fortified Old Town, Gamlebyen, is the best-preserved of its kind in Northern Europe. The modern centre sits across the Glomma; a small passenger ferry links the two. Most travellers see it as a day trip or a single overnight on the Oslo–Halden line.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Local buses fan out from the bus station; the small passenger ferry between the city centre and Gamlebyen runs frequently in season and also calls at Gressvik (check timetable). Taxis rank opposite the main pedestrian street. Driving is easy outside the 16:00–17:00 rush on the main entry roads.
