Sarpsborg is Norway's 11th-largest city and the capital of Østfold, founded by St Olaf in 1016 at the Sarpsfossen falls on the Glomma river. It sits on the E6 and the Oslo–Gothenburg railway, 1 h 21 min from Oslo and 2 h 29 min from Gothenburg. The centre is small and walkable, the falls are 10 minutes from the station, and most travellers use it as a single-night stop or a base for Fredrikstad, Halden and the Hvaler archipelago.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: station to Sarpsfossen is about 10 minutes on foot. Buses run frequently between Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad (Glommaringen, about 8 an hour); in other directions buses are infrequent and a car helps. Driving, avoid the river bridges at 07:30–08:30 and 15:30–17:00.

Sarpsborg is a low-risk Norwegian city; the real issues are winter ice, short daylight and thin late-night transport. Emergency numbers: 112 police, 113 ambulance, 110 fire.
  • Restaurants with table service are few — about a dozen year-round; book or eat early.
  • Buses outside the Fredrikstad corridor are infrequent; check times before relying on them.
  • Bridges over the Glomma jam at rush hour; add time if driving.
  • Winter brings ice and short daylight; the falls and parks are best in summer.
