Fredrikstad is a river-mouth town 90 km south of Oslo whose 1567 fortified Old Town, Gamlebyen, is the best-preserved of its kind in Northern Europe. The modern centre sits across the Glomma; a small passenger ferry links the two. Most travellers see it as a day trip or a single overnight on the Oslo–Halden line.

The centre is walkable. Local buses fan out from the bus station; the small passenger ferry between the city centre and Gamlebyen runs frequently in season and also calls at Gressvik (check timetable).
