Veszprém
Give Veszprém one full day and one night: the castle district is a 2-hour walk, and it works as a base for Lake Balaton's north shore.
Veszprém is one of Hungary's oldest cities and its first bishopric, built on a rock ridge about 15 km north of Lake Balaton. The compact castle district holds the cathedral, the Fire Tower and a run of small museums, all walkable in half a day. Most travellers pass through on the way to Balaton or use it as a quieter, cheaper base than Balatonfüred.

The centre is small enough to walk: Óváros tér to the castle gate is about 10 minutes uphill. Local buses (Volánbusz) cover the outer districts and the stations; buy a ticket from the driver or a machine. Trains and buses both leave from Jutasi út, about 2 km north of the centre.
