Khujand is Tajikistan's second city, on the Syr Darya in the north, and it is far from the Pamirs and from Dushanbe by road. It has an old fortress, a large covered bazaar and Soviet-era architecture. Most travellers pass through between Uzbekistan and Dushanbe. It is an easy first night after crossing from Tashkent, but it is not a reason to visit Tajikistan by itself.

Getting around

Taxis are cheap (about 10–30 TJS for a short city ride, 2026 estimate) and the main sights are within walking distance. Marshrutkas run fixed routes for a few somoni. Shared taxis leave from the main taxi stand for Dushanbe (about 5–7 h through the Anzob tunnel route, check road status) and for the border with Uzbekistan.

Safety

Petty crime is low, but check your government's travel advice before going, and register or carry documents as required; the Afghan border areas are the main concern, not Khujand.

  • Mountain road conditions and tunnel closures can change; verify onward routes with your driver or guesthouse.
  • Summer heat is high; midday can exceed 35 C.
