Khujand is Tajikistan's second city, on the Syr Darya in the north. It has an old fortress, a large covered bazaar and Soviet-era architecture. Most travellers pass through on the way between Uzbekistan and Dushanbe.

Language
Tajik is a form of Persian written in Cyrillic; Farsi and Dari speakers understand much of it. Russian is the second language for most educated people. In Gorno-Badakhshan people speak Pamiri languages (Shughni, Wakhi, Rushani and others) at home. English is rare outside hostels and young people.
