Fargo is the largest city for 350 km in any direction, a flat Red River Valley hub of about 105,000 people on the North Dakota side of the river from Moorhead, Minnesota. Downtown is compact and walkable, the airport is small, and one Amtrak train stops here in the middle of the night. Two nights covers the museums, the murals and the food; most travellers pass through on I-94 between Minneapolis and the plains.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and crosses the river to Moorhead on foot. Matbus runs Monday–Saturday to most of the city and Moorhead but not to the airport. Uber and Lyft cover the gaps; parking is easy and mostly free.

Safety

Fargo is a low-crime city by US standards; the real risks are winter cold, ice, and driving on I-94 in snow. Downtown at night is busy and well lit.
  • Winter is the real hazard: −20 °C days and ice on pavements from Dec to Feb.
  • The Amtrak Empire Builder calls at about 2:30 AM and is often late.
  • The main Jefferson Lines stop sits on the outskirts at 1211 41st St N, not downtown.
  • Summer heat index can pass 35 °C with high humidity.
