Moorhead is the Minnesota half of the Fargo-Moorhead metro, on the Red River's west bank. Its own draw is small and walkable: a Viking ship museum, two college campuses and a 19th-century mansion. Most travellers sleep here for cheaper rooms and cross into Fargo for food, baseball and nightlife. One full day covers the city; two nights makes a comfortable Fargo-Moorhead stop on I-94.

Getting around

Matbus runs local buses across Fargo-Moorhead six days a week; the downtown Moorhead and Fargo routes connect over the river. Distances inside Moorhead are short, but winters make a car or a short rideshare the practical choice. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops in Fargo, not Moorhead, and calls in the middle of the night.

Watch out

Safety

Moorhead is a low-crime small city; the genuine risks are winter cold, ice on pavements and unlit riverfront paths after dark. Cross into Fargo for late nightlife and take a rideshare back.
  • Winter cold is the real hazard: −20 °C and lower with wind chill, ice on pavements from Nov to Mar.
  • Amtrak's Empire Builder serves Fargo once daily each way, in the middle of the night — plan a taxi or a hotel night.
  • The original Dairy Queen is seasonal, roughly March to the end of October, and closes on Easter and July 4.
  • Some Fargo bars and restaurants are a 20–30 min walk from downtown Moorhead; after midnight, rideshare is thin.
