Fargo
Give Fargo 2 nights: walk downtown, see the Plains Art Museum and the woodchipper, then drive on. Skip it if you want mountains or a big-city scene.
Fargo is the largest city for 350 km in any direction, a flat Red River Valley hub of about 105,000 people on the North Dakota side of the river from Moorhead, Minnesota. Downtown is compact and walkable, the airport is small, and one Amtrak train stops here in the middle of the night. Two nights covers the museums, the murals and the food; most travellers pass through on I-94 between Minneapolis and the plains.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter is the real hazard: −20 °C days and ice on pavements from Dec to Feb.
- The Amtrak Empire Builder calls at about 2:30 AM and is often late.
- The main Jefferson Lines stop sits on the outskirts at 1211 41st St N, not downtown.
- Summer heat index can pass 35 °C with high humidity.
Fargo is a low-crime city by US standards; the real risks are winter cold, ice, and driving on I-94 in snow. Downtown at night is busy and well lit.
