Bloemfontein
Give Bloemfontein one full day, two nights at most: museums on President Brand Street, Naval Hill, then drive on. Skip it as a standalone trip.
Bloemfontein is South Africa's judicial capital and the middle of the country: the N1, N6 and N8 meet here, so it works as a stop between Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Eastern Cape rather than a destination. The centre is compact and walkable by day, the museums are the reason to stop, and most visitors see the city in a day. Two nights covers it comfortably; one night is enough if you arrive early.
