Bloemfontein
Give Bloemfontein one full day, two nights at most: museums on President Brand Street, Naval Hill, then drive on. Skip it as a standalone trip.
Bloemfontein is South Africa's judicial capital and the middle of the country: the N1, N6 and N8 meet here, so it works as a stop between Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Eastern Cape rather than a destination. The centre is compact and walkable by day, the museums are the reason to stop, and most visitors see the city in a day. Two nights covers it comfortably; one night is enough if you arrive early.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread between the centre, Naval Hill and the northern suburbs, and the airport is outside town. The centre is walkable by day. Minibus taxis serve the townships but are not aimed at visitors. Ride-hailing apps work in the city; agree the fare or check the app price before you get in.

Scams and watch-outs
- Avoid the area around the railway station and streets east of the railway line, especially after dark.
- Shops close Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday; museums keep shorter weekend hours.
- Restaurants serve early: after about 19:30 on a weeknight you may be rushed.
- The N1 north towards Gauteng is a toll road; keep cash or a card for the plaza.
- Summer thunderstorms bring heavy afternoon rain; winter nights drop to freezing.
Calmer than most South African cities. Walk the centre and Second Avenue by day and early evening; avoid the railway station area and streets east of the line after dark, and keep car doors locked at intersections.
