  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Aurora is Illinois's second-largest city, about 35 miles west of Chicago on the Fox River, and the last stop on Metra's BNSF line from Union Station. Its downtown is denser and older than a typical suburb: a restored 1930s Art Deco theatre, a riverwalk, a 19th-century fire station museum and a brewery in a roundhouse. Most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to a Chicago trip or a base for the Fox River towns, not a standalone destination.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical default: sights are spread over 10 km and buses run infrequently. Pace buses link the Aurora Transportation Center with the rest of the city and with Elgin, Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia and Naperville. Downtown itself is walkable — station to Paramount is about 10 min on foot.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min–1 h 30 min

Metra BNSF from Aurora Transportation Center to Union Station

Cheapest and easiest big-city fix; check the last return train.

Geneva

go

Door to door: About 20–30 min

Metra BNSF one or two stops east, or 15 min by car

Third Street shops and riverfront; pairs well with a half-day in Aurora.

St. Charles

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Car via Route 31 north, about 20 min

River downtown and trails; no direct rail link.

Batavia

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Car or Pace bus via Route 31, about 10–15 min

Small river depot district; combine with Geneva in one afternoon.

Elgin

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Car via I-88 and Route 31, about 35–45 min

Pace links exist but are slow; drive unless you have time.

Bartlett

skip

Door to door: About 35 min

Car east on Route 64 and Route 59, about 30 min

Mostly residential; little for a visitor beyond the trail network.

Farnsworth House, Plano

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Car south via Route 34, about 30 min

Mies van der Rohe glass house; timed tours only, book ahead.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Broadway corridor

Walk to the Paramount, riverwalk and restaurants; a small number of hotels, so book ahead for show nights.

I-88 and Farnsworth area

Chain hotels, free parking and the outlet mall; you need a car for everything.

Naperville or Geneva (nearby)

More beds and dining, 15–25 min by car or Metra; use it if downtown Aurora is full.

Watch out

Safety

Aurora is a normal US Midwestern city: downtown and the riverwalk are fine on foot in daylight and early evening. Use standard city sense after dark, keep valuables out of sight in parked cars, and drive rather than walk along the highway-frontage strips.
  • Metra BNSF is a commuter line: last trains toward Chicago leave in the evening, so check the timetable before a late dinner.
  • Weekend and evening Pace service is thin; do not plan on a bus after about 19:00 without checking.
  • Winter ice on downtown pavements and riverwalk steps is a real fall risk.
  • Some downtown venues and small museums keep limited, seasonal hours — confirm before travelling.

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for ORD and MDW: Metra versus car times field-checked, plus a late-arrival taxi fallback.
  2. Three walking clusters with anchors: downtown Broadway and the Paramount, the riverwalk and Stolp Island, Phillips Park.
  3. Place pages with verified hours for the Paramount, SciTech, the fire museum and Blackberry Farm.
  4. Metra last-train fixtures for Friday and Saturday so evening plans can go green.
