Illinois is two trips in one state. Chicagoland is a dense, transit-served city region where you do not need a car; everything south of I-80 is farmland, small cities and river hills that you reach by Amtrak or interstate and cover by car. Most visitors should treat Chicago as the base and add one downstate stop — Springfield for Lincoln sites, the Shawnee Hills for hiking — rather than trying to loop the whole state.
