Hakuba is a valley of seven-plus ski resorts below the Northern Japan Alps in Nagano Prefecture, about 2.5–4.5 hours from Tokyo by train or bus. Winter is the reason most people come: 10 m+ of snow at some resorts and Olympic downhill runs at Happo-one. In the green season the same lifts carry hikers and mountain bikers, and three clear lakes sit south of the village. Bases are spread along the valley, so where you sleep decides how you move.

Getting around

The valley is about 15 km end to end and the JR Oito line links Hakuba, Kamishiro and the northern hamlets. In winter the Genki-Go shuttle runs evening services from 17:00 on three routes at ¥300 a ride (check the season's timetable). Outside winter, rent a bike or walk; many hostels rent bikes. A car helps for the lakes and trailheads.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are winter driving, off-piste terrain and altitude on the ridge. Carry a charged phone, tell someone your route, and check the day's avalanche and weather bulletin before going above the lifts.
  • Bases are far apart: check the walk from your bed to the lift before booking.
  • The last bus from Nagano to Hakuba leaves at 20:30; a later arrival means a taxi or a Nagano night.
  • Lift operations and shuttle routes change with snow and season: confirm on the resort's own site.
  • Winter roads and car parks ice over; drive only with winter tyres and check conditions.
  • Onsen etiquette: wash and rinse fully before entering the bath.
